The rising cost of storage media — and how to spend less on it

Flash storage isn't as cheap as it used to be, and a lot of usable media gets thrown away. Here's where the waste hides and how to cut your media bill.

For years the assumption was that storage only ever got cheaper. That assumption has stopped being safe. Flash prices move with the memory market, supply is tighter than it was, and the industrial and specialist cards that many operations depend on have never been cheap in the first place. If your organisation gets through cards and drives in volume, media is a line item worth looking at.

The good news: most of the money isn’t lost to price. It’s lost to waste.

Where the waste hides

Perfectly good media gets binned. A card comes out of service and, with no way to know its real health, it goes in the drawer or the skip. Often it has most of its life left. Flash wears gradually and predictably, and a card at a few per cent of its rated cycles is nowhere near finished.

Counterfeits get bought as genuine. The market is full of re-marked and fake-capacity cards that pass a casual check and fail in service. Pay full price for a genuine industrial card and get a relabelled consumer part, and you’ve lost the money and inherited the risk.

Cards get replaced instead of reset. A card that just needs a certified wipe gets retired because no one can prove it’s clean. The replacement costs many times what the wipe would have.

How we help

This is the whole point of what we do.

  • Certified erasure extends life. We wipe media to recognised standards and certify it, so a card that’s still healthy goes back into service instead of into landfill — with the paperwork to prove it’s clean.
  • We prove what’s genuine and what’s worn. Our ASTRID tools read a card’s true health and spot counterfeits on the silicon, so you know exactly what you’re holding before you spend on a replacement.
  • Buy refurbished with confidence. Certified, health-checked media at a fraction of new-price — because it’s been proven, not just wiped and hoped.

Put a number on it

The savings are real, but they’re specific to your media and volumes. That’s why we built a quick estimate tool: tell it roughly what you buy, and it gives you an indicative comparison of buying new versus using our service. It’s a starting point, not a quote — but it’s usually enough to show whether this is worth a conversation.

When you’re ready for an exact figure, a short brief gets you a fixed quote with no obligation.
